Now that the Presidential election is over and the voters have spoken, we are all challenged to moveforward decisively with energy and purpose.  Even though at this moment, we may be somewhat dispirited, disillusioned and disappointed, at times like these we have to remind ourselves that we as a people have endured far worse.  You have fought a good fight, so do not become weary in well-doing.  We need to remember that the government is on the shoulders of a power higher than the White House and that alone gives us reason to be encouraged and reason for hope.

Starting today, our immediate goal should be to map out a strategy to ensure that in 2018 we have a winning down ballot in every state and in 2020 a Democratic President, and Congress.  The plan has to begin now and the follow through has to be in earnest.  The plan has to be put into action, so that the legacy of President Obama and our accomplishments over the past decades are not eroded or lost.

The second imperative is that starting today we have to push local and state government leaders to do their jobs and represent the interests of ALL the people – not just the ones who supported Trump.  Community involvement and empowerment will never be more important than it will be with a Trump administration.  We can’t sit idly by and expect others to protect us, otherwise our most basic rights and priveleges will be taken away.

It won’t be not enough to march.  We have to translate our protest into social action and work at every level to make sure that government works for us, especially to assure criminal justice reform.  Do not be fooled into believing that all is lost!!  We may need to take a little time to get our bearing and mend our wounds, but we have to come back out fighting.  Together with our collective wisdom, strength, knowledge and resilience, we can forge forward.  The struggle begins today!!
